The Church Pt 6
Acts 2:42 ESV
42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
What was responsible for the launch of the church in Acts 2?
Well there was a list of things.
- 400 years of silence, anticipation, and prayers.
- Jesus came on the scene to provide all people with the means to a right relationship with the Father.
Matthew 5:17-20 ESV
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
- Jesus built relationships and taught them what it means to follow Him.
- He taught them to love. Matthew 5:43-48
- He taught them to address sin. Matthew 5:21-42, Matthew 6:19-24, Matthew 7:1-6
- He taught them to pray. Matthew 5:43-48, Matthew 6:5-18
- He taught them to forgive. Matthew 6:5-18
- He taught them to submit and obey. Matthew 6:25-34, Matthew 7:21-23
Jesus taught all this while living it out.
He lived this for all to see as an example to follow.
- Then, during the most challenging times of their life, He told them to wait.
Acts 1:4-8 ESV
4 And while staying[a] with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
- Wait
Nobody likes to wait. That’s why we have microwaves, fast food, speed limits, red lights, Uber eats, Next day shipping, fast drying paints, on and on.
- Power
Where Jesus leads, you need the power of the Holy Spirit to be His witnesses
