Living as a Martyr pt5
Define martyr = A person who voluntarily suffers death as the penalty of witnessing or refusing to renounce a religion.
dying for your biblical beliefs but to live as a martyr is to spend your life living for those same beliefs. The most effective way to live as a martyr has less to do with living against something and is driven by living for something.
Galatians 5:22-24 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Hupomonē means "a remaining under," as when one bears up under a burden. It refers to steadfastness in difficult circumstances.
Makrothumia, which is used in Galatians 5:22, is a compound formed by makros (“long”) and thumos (“passion” or “temper”). “Patience” in Galatians 5:22 literally means “long temper,” in the sense of “the ability to hold one’s temper for a long time.”
- Patience is something that I have grown up being told that I should never pray for.
- How do we become patient as believers if we don’t pray for it.
- This isn’t something that is normally given, it is developed.
It’s been my experience that patience has less to do with me controlling my attitude and more to do with waiting on God to intervene, not in the situation but in me.
James 1:2-4 ESV
2 Count it all joy, my brothers,[b] when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
- When trouble comes and it will focus your attention on what God wants to do in you.
- We lose our temper because things don’t go the way we think they should or we feel attacked and there’s nothing we can do about it but there’s plenty we can do about it. What has to be done is a work within us.
In Genesis 6 and 7 we have the account of the ark and the flood.
- God searched the whole earth and was only pleased with Noah.
- Noah worked for over 100 years to build the ark and no one believed.
Hebrews 10:12-13 ESV
12 But when Christ[b] had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet
— The goal as believers is to become Christ like.
Seth doesn’t like sitting but there’s purpose in it.
