Living as a Martyr Pt 9

Pastor Scott Arnold

Define martyr = A person who voluntarily suffers death as the penalty of witnessing or refusing to renounce a religion.

Martyrdom is about dying for your biblical beliefs but to live as a martyr is to spend your life living for those same beliefs. The most effective way to live as a martyr has less to do with living against something and is driven by living for something.

Galatians 5:22-24 ESV

  • We have talked week after week about how each of the fruit are being developed in us and how they are the very character of God.
  • Gentleness is how Jesus ministered everywhere He went.
  • He would address the issue and extend grace.
  • He will never condemn and always forgive.

Matthew 7:1-5 ESV

  • Our judgement towards others is removing God from the situation and stepping into His role.
  • It is ignoring our place before God.
  • There is no gentleness in that.
  • So should we simply ignore the faults of others? No more than you should ignore yours.

Galatians 6:1-2 ESV

  • In all that we do, we must do through the lens of restoration.
  • Jesus desired and did bring restoration to your life.
  • How can we be a judge when we don’t even know what’s best for ourselves?

Matthew 6:5-8 ESV

What it says

  1. Pray
  2. Don’t be like hypocrites
  3. Their purpose is to be seen
  4. God sees in secret
  5. God rewards
  6. Get to the point
  7. God knows what you need before you ask

The ultimate form of gentleness isn’t shown towards others or even yourself but towards God.

John 3:22-30 ESV

  • John extended gentleness to his followers by placing himself as the one having already dealt with these issues.
  • His solution was to elevate Christ to His rightful position.
  • This meant that he had to give up his right to be the man.
  • Jesus Himself not only expressed gentleness towards people during conflict but also exemplified it by the way He traveled.

Matthew 21:1-5 NIV.        NIV

  • Even when He was being exalted He was pointing to the one who sent Him.
  • He came in a non threatening manner.
  • But it won’t always be that way.

Matthew 24:36 ESV

  • There is coming a time when God will send His Son to retrieve all those who have believed.
  • It’s at this point that Jesus will return in the power of God.

Revelation 19:11-16 ESV

  • We have this picture of Jesus as helpless even cowardly.
  • In reality he is obedient to the Father who determined the beginning and will determine the end.
  • Why should we wage war when God already has.
  • He is simply expressing His gentleness by allowing more time for others to believe.
